The Nakba Walk is a way for Malaysians to show their solidarity with Palestinians and to raise awareness about the ongoing struggle for their rights.
A group of activists and supporters gathered at Universiti Malaya for a Nakba Walk.
Several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) organised the event to commemorate the Nakba which is the Palestinian exodus in 1948.
It is also to raise awareness about the ongoing struggle for Palestinian rights.
The participants, carrying Palestinian flags and banners, walked around the campus.
One of the organizers, Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) Malaysia chairman Prof. Mohd Nazari Ismail, explained the importance of such events.
The walk is a form of resistance against the ongoing Israeli occupation and colonization of Palestinian land.
Participating in the walk draws people’s attention to the Palestinian cause and promotes solidarity worldwide.
Al Jazeera bureau chief for Malaysia, Sameer Allawi, said the Nakba was traumatic.
He pointed out that it displaced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homes, and the Israeli occupation continues today.
Allawi, whom the Israel regime detained in 2011, hoped the Nakba Walk would strengthen the public’s resolve to continue supporting the Palestinian cause.
Al-Quds Foundation Malaysia CEO Dr Sharif Abu Shamala said the event was a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for Palestinian rights and the importance of solidarity and remembrance.
The organizers hope that events like these will continue to inspire others to join the movement for Palestinian rights and contribute towards a just and peaceful future for all.
